Conquered regions are transformed into imperial provinces or vassal states. These territories are governed either by officials appointed by the Emperor or by kings who have sworn fealty to the Empire, pledging loyalty directly to the Emperor himself. Those born in the core regions near the Alba River are considered "true" Nilfgaardians and enjoy significantly higher social status and privileges compared to people from the conquered provinces.

In The Witcher series, the ruler of the Nilfgaardian Empire is Emperor Emhyr var Emreis, a figure of exceptional political and strategic acumen. Under his leadership, the Empire has launched aggressive campaigns northward, expanding its territory across the Pontar River and advancing toward the last remaining lands of the North.
